Due to the modesty and humility we should be cultivating in our spiritual lives, we sometimes mistake for vanity the desire to make ourselves attractive and wear “fashionable” clothes.
While it’s true that many people in the world can mask their insecurities with fashion, makeup, accessories, and the pursuit of the perfect physique or figure, as long as you know that your worth is in the love of Christ, there’s nothing wrong with taking steps to improve your appearance.
Also, we have to remember that it is God who creates the beauty that surrounds us! And God created man in his own image, so it’s okay to accentuate and highlight the beauty He created in you! Taking care of your appearance also conveys confidence and can inspire trust from those around you, which is very important when asking someone for a date.
So when you work on yourself (while not making it into an idol), you are honoring God’s creation and appreciating the way He created you by taking care of your appearance and paying attention to how you present yourself.
Here are some tips on how to develop your personal style (regardless of whether you are a man or a woman) to make a good impression and express your unique personality.
1. Pay attention to your personal hygiene
The first step to making a good impression is simply in practicing good hygiene. When you go out, take a refreshing shower, try a nice hairstyle, brush your teeth thoroughly, etc. Have you ever noticed that washing your face can automatically make you feel more energized and awake? You can also care for your skin by rubbing it with a light face cream, especially in cold weather. (If you’re a woman, you can try natural makeup, choosing what makes you feel most comfortable).
You can also carry mints or chewing gum in case you want to eat something and keep your breath fresh. You also might consider taking a small bottle of your favorite perfume to freshen up your scent. In this way, you convey a healthy and fresh impression that is very attractive.
2. Discover the colors you like!
To have an original and elegant style, it is not necessary to have a large wardrobe or to buy a lot of clothes. You can often put together great outfits for going out or for work with a few simple pieces of clothing. First, think about which colors you like to wear and what suits your personality so that you can integrate them into your wardrobe. Once you know which colors you like, you can see what color combinations are possible – for example, light blue and brown go well together! Black and white go with any color!
3. Make sure you wear the correct sizes.
Check if some clothes are too big or too small. Often, without realizing it, we wear clothes that are too big and not conducive to our figure or physique. Other times, it’s too tight, which is uncomfortable and can look weird. Find the ideal measurements for your body (everyone’s body is different – and remember that certain brands or garments may require different sizes than others).
4. Sort out your closet – Stock up on basics and neutrals.
Take the time to organize your closet, leaving out the clothes you love and donating the ones you don’t. If you’re missing a piece of clothing to mix and match, invest in a few essential pieces.
For example, if you’re a man, you can buy a neutral shirt or two (light blue, white), dark jeans or pants, a blazer, and a knit sweater. With this basic equipment you can combine different outfits. If you are a woman, you can buy a gray check blazer, black trousers and some neutral-colored blouses.
By the way, a good pair of elegant and comfortable shoes is always a good investment.
5. Get inspired and experiment!
You can get inspiration from other people you know, or “borrow” ideas from posters and advertisements. You don’t have to follow every trend, of course, as the shops try to oversell clothing, but you can browse around to see what catches your eye and what works with your style.
6. Complete with valuable accessories.
Accessories can become interesting additions to your outfit. Maybe you inherited a beautiful watch, or you have a cross necklace that you love very much, or earrings that someone you love gave you. Don’t hesitate to combine them. An eye-catching accessory adds a special touch to a neutral outfit.
7. Be thankful when someone compliments your style.
Sometimes we have false humility and feel ashamed when someone compliments our looks. So the next time someone tells you, “You look great,” don’t say “Oh,” but say “thank you” and genuinely appreciate the compliment. Also, make sure to note the clothes you are wearing because now you know that this outfit suits you well!
8. Have fun – don’t compare yourself!
The most important thing is that you shouldn’t compare yourself. It should be fun to discover your own style! Everyone is different, and our bodies are different. A piece of clothing that looks good on another man or woman may not look particularly good on you. And it would be boring if we all dressed the same. Find the clothes that make you feel good and look good.
Finally, remember that your style can change many times throughout your life. Embrace those changes and find the appropriate style that works for you.
You are made in the image of the Creator of the universe! Get out there and show the world.
